Before the days of global positioning satellites, sailors used a device called a sextant to get their navigational positioning twice each day. At dawn and dusk, they would “shoot the stars” and get a position. Using the North Star or True North as their reference point they could determine the correct course which would lead them towards their intended destination.
Focal Point
Like a compass that guides us on the long and winding road to where, ultimately, we want to be, we need something that will help us stay the course, preventing us from drifting aimlessly. We need orientation, a focal point to steady our gaze. We cannot avoid the unexpected twists and turns life has brought us or will even bring us as we head into a new year, but we don’t have to drift aimlessly, reacting to circumstances as they come.
Vision Board
A vision board is a tangible reminder of the vision we set for ourselves. Acting as a daily compass, a vision board can be like a fixed focal point-casting a vision for where we want to go, who we want to be, and where we’re headed within sight. It can help us move in the right direction, setting a trajectory for the year and the years ahead.
How to Begin
One way to begin is to start reflecting on the bigger picture and take notes. What do you want to be able to say about your life a year from now? Or at the end of this decade? What’s most important to you in life? What thrills you? What captures your allegiance and inspires your passion? Having a clear awareness of these things will be helpful in getting you to your intended destination.
Through the use of pictures, words, symbols, even doodles designing a vision board will help you to creatively define what makes up the foundation of you. You can draw pictures, cut and paste photos, words, quotes, or prayers that inspire you.
Dream Again
I hope that you will ponder some of these questions or even consider putting a vision board together. And as you do, I hope you will remember that God has created you uniquely with an extraordinary purpose. position and vocation in mind. Take time to allow yourself to dream again, and think about what inspires you will begin to lead you toward what He has called you to.
Fresh Opportunity
Each day is an opportunity for His love to revive you and refuel your passion for Him. As we pursue a daily time focused on Jesus and His Word, we will have greater clarity in our purpose and our passion fueled. When we don’t we can get off course and our passion begins to wane. Drifting happens little by little.
Prayer
Jesus, you are my True North and you have charted a unique course for my life. It is my greatest desire to keep my eyes fixed on you so that I will finish this life well. Awaken within me a passion for you that cannot be contained and the perseverance to stay on the intended course you have for me. Open my heart and mind so that I can hear from you afresh today. I’m ready for an adventure with you into new places to be discovered.
